Big second half pushes Colorado College past Ithaca

April 3, 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—Seventh-ranked Colorado College scored six of the game’s final seven goals to remain unbeaten on the year with a 12-8 victory over Ithaca College in women’s lacrosse action in the annual Heron Draw in Geneva, N.Y. Colorado College sophomore Kate Fitzgerald (Sudbury, Mass.) led all scorers with six points on three goals and three assists.

The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead on scores from Fitzgerald and sophomore Robin Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) before the Bombers tallied five unanswered goals.

Senior Lindsey Breese (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) started the run at the 15:39 mark with a free position goal, while first-year Meagan Howell (Newark/Newark, N.Y.) tied the score five minutes later with a free position tally of her own.

The Bombers got two more free position scores from senior Meaghan Light (Essex Junction/South Heron, Vt.) and a goal from first-year Kim Medla (Brewster/Brewster, N.Y.) to jump ahead 5-2 with 2:07 left in the opening half.

That three goal advantage didn’t last long as senior Cassie Abel (Vashon Island, Wash.) and Harvey both found the back of the net in the closing minute to send the Tigers into halftime down by just one, 5-4.

Colorado and Ithaca traded goals in the first half of the second session, but the Tigers came through in the closing 13 minutes, scoring six goals of the game’s final seven goals. Five different players scored for Colorado College during that stretch, including two from Abel.

Abel matched Fitzgerald’s game-high three goals, while Harvey chipped in two. Medla led the way for Ithaca with three points on two goals and an assist, while Light contributed two scores.

Colorado outshot the Bombers 37-15, but Ithaca connected on five of its six free position attempts to keep the Tigers close.

In goal, first-year Emily Brooks (Ward Melville/Setauket, N.Y.) made 10 saves for the Bombers, while Alana Dalton (Aurora, Colo.) had two stops for Colorado College.
